When I was a child I adored the pageantry of Halloween. I remember carving pumpkins with my parents and grandparents each year, carefully picking out my costume, and scouring the shelves of the local grocery store to select the absolute BEST candy for my parents to give out to trick-or-treaters. Halloween night itself was always an invigorating mixture of excitement and terror…multiple families in my neighborhood would make over their lawns turning their front walkways into pathways of horror. My own father would answer the door in a creepy clown mask, petrifying our younger visitors. It was always such a fun and unique time of year.
As we get closer to Halloween I’m seeing an increasing number of pumpkins and ghouls gracing the fronts of homes on my daily drives to and from work and am reminded of the Halloweens of my childhood. While I am very much looking forward to re-experiencing youthful Halloweens with our own child in the future, I am finding myself wanting to have more grown up versions of the night for the next few years.
