Five Wellness Destinations in the United States That Make the Perfect Place to Reconnect with Your Mind and Body

March 22, 2018

Spring has sprung and I am finding myself reinvigorated and inspired by this period of transition.  After a winter of hibernation, I am ready to escape city life and reconnect with my body, mind and soul.  Fortunately for me, and for those of you also residing in the US, our country is full of accessible options that make the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate, and have a full-on detoxifying experience.  Today I will be sharing my top five favorite wellness destinations in the United States, each guaranteed to leave you feeling relaxed, recharged, and ready to take on the summer months ahead.

Our country is full of accessible options that make the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate, & have a full-on detoxifying experience.  Today I will be sharing my top five favorite wellness destinations in the United States, each guaranteed to leave you feeling relaxed, recharged, and ready to take on the summer months.

Big Sur, California

When I was in high school, shortly after I got my driver’s license, I began taking long drives into the middle of nowhere.  During these drives I would disconnect from reality for hours at a time, sometimes for an entire day.  I would return to civilization – to my course load, extracurriculars, friends, and jobs – feeling calm, cool, and collected. There is just something fundamentally soothing about long, leisurely drives.

When you couple that feeling of calm with the kind of world-class views you get around Big Sur, you have the recipe for an idyllic and soothing getaway.  Whether you prefer breathtaking hikes, nourishing food, or a restorative spa weekend, this rugged strip of California coastline has it all.  Disconnect from reality at the New Camaldoli Hermitage, a rural working Benedictine monastery, or, if you are looking for a way to reconnect with nature, at one of the region’s many campgrounds.  Regardless of your ultimate choice of accommodation, you are certain to be greeted by breathtaking views and leave Big Sur feeling rested and rejuvenated.

Sedona, Arizona

There are certain places on Earth where you can feel a tangible sense of mystery and magic.  Sedona, Arizona is one such place.  Situated in the desert in Central Arizona, Sedona and the surrounding land have been revered for their healing energy.  Whether that is fact or fiction is open to interpretation, however there is no denying the fact that the region feels a bit different.

Sedona has been a mecca for health enthusiasts and believers in the region’s mystical properties for decades and is overflowing with destinations centered around rest and rejuvenation.  Book a stay at Mii Amo Spa complete with a customized wellness journey or simply spend a day out in the desert, taking in the magical pink rock formations before returning to life centered and ready to take on the world.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe, much like Sedona, has remained a wellness destination for decades, largely thanks to its wealth of wellness-oriented hotels, spas, and spiritual-based experiences.  The incredible physical beauty of the region, from its striking colors to unusual rock formations, make it a natural place to disconnect and unwind.

The city and surrounding landscape, such as the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, are full of hidden getaways.  The Inn of the Five Graces offers a spa experience complete with deep soaking tubs and unique East Asian therapies coupled with unbeatable scenery.  If you are looking for an option that gets you a bit closer to nature, consider exploring the Bandelier National Monument.  Located less than an hour from downtown Santa Fe, Bandelier offers a campground and an extensive network of trails leading to historical Native American sites with well-preserved hieroglyphics just waiting to be explored.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

As a Southern California resident, I can attest to the fact that Joshua Tree National Park is a frequently overlooked travel destination.  Though it is located a mere few hours from Los Angeles, a trip to Joshua Tree feels like a journey to a completely different planet.  While the surrounding desert towns have a feel that is decidedly that of a resort town, Joshua Tree remains an oasis of comparative peace and solitude.

Enjoy a hike full of spectacular views on one of the park’s many trails. If you are looking for something a bit more laid back, be sure to take a dip in the healing waters of Desert Hot Springs.  There are lodging options abound, however if you are looking for a truly unusual experience, check out 29 Palms Inn.  The quirky 70-acre property sits just beside Joshua Tree and is full of unique cabins and bungalows, making it the perfect place to unwind and take in a desert sunset.

Breitenbush Hot Springs, Willamette National Forest, Oregon

Just talking about Breitenbush Hot Springs, situated in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon, gets the Pacific Northwest girl in me excited.  The singular retreat, located two hours outside of Portland, offers vegetarian cuisine and daily well-being programs (both mental and physical).  You can escape for a single day or for months on end and choose between personal and group retreats.  At Breitenbush Hot Springs there is something for everyone.

If you happen to want to make your break from reality permanent, you are welcome to stay at Breitenbush Hot Springs on a trial basis.  Those who fall in love with the magical worker-owned co-op have the option of lending their skills for one full year as a way of proving themselves.  After one year, the community will vote to decide whether you can remain as a full-time member.

The United States is full of exciting spots to steal away to for a relaxing night or a long weekend, you just have to know where to look.  Next time you find yourself in need of a break from reality, or if you simply want to detoxify, cleanse, and reset your body for the warmer months ahead, look no further than these five unique wellness destinations.
