Classic Meets Modern in This French Home Tour

September 15, 2016

The home tour I’m sharing with you today is very much in keeping with this month’s French-influenced theme. This bright and newly renovated apartment sits proudly in historic Lyon, France and exudes classic elegance with a contemporary touch.

If you remember the first few home tours I shared, you might remember the name of Lyon-based French interior design house Maison Hand. Today’s tour is yet another stunning work from the design duo, only this one is a bit more personal. This is in fact designers Pierre Emmanuel Martin and Stéphane Garotin’s personal abode and it is every bit as fabulous, if not more so, than their client work. As you will see, the Lyon home that the two share is another incredible example of how fusing eclectic finds with classic touches can create a very unique and modern look.

Put on some Édith Piaf, pour yourself a glass of Burgundy, and soak up the beauty that is this French home tour.

Located in a building built in 1852, the space wraps around the entirety of an inner courtyard, giving the apartment ample light from every direction. The two were determined to take advantage of the apartment’s positioning and set out to create a space that showcased the classic bones and details of the building.

Using light, neutral colors and very few patterns, the two began filling their newly renovated space with diverse finds from their extensive travels. Throughout the apartment, you’ll find traces of past adventures in Japanese baskets, a wooden touches from Indonesia, and sculptures from Athens.

The pair kept the apartment’s main bedroom simple, filling it with soothing tones and limited embellishments.

The bathroom is a bit of a departure from the rest of the space in that it underwent a very modern makeover, resulting in floor to ceiling marble. There is nothing classic about the space yet it still manages to flow perfectly with the rest of the apartment.

The kitchen is another area where the love the two share for modern touches is apparent. The sleek, open plan features a streamlined countertop, open shelving, and a giant island meant for lingering over.

My adoration for Maison Hand’s style grows with every example of their work that I see, and the duo’s own home is no exception to the rule. It blends modern and classic style in such a chic way I can’t help but feel inspired to do the same in my own home. I hope you all enjoyed this quick trip to Lyon. Please let me know what you think of this gorgeous space!
