When my husband and I initially moved in together it was into his pre-existing apartment. We planned on living there for at least another year and slowly began purchasing new pieces of furniture and art to replace the “bachelor” items he previously had in place. It was exciting to pick out new items together and, after over a year, our main living space had come together in a way I was really happy with.
Fast forward to a couple months later when we were forced to move to a newly renovated apartment across the hall. Our new home is absolutely gorgeous but has an entirely different layout than our last one. All of the furniture and art we excitedly purchased? Well, it awkwardly found a home in our new loft-like living/dining/office space. Awkwardly being the key word. It works and I did my best to make it feel like home but after living in the new apartment for six months it has become so clear that some changes are needed in order to achieve our desired layout.
When I came across online interior design website Laurel & Wolf, I was inspired to dream up a living room remodel and to start really thinking about what changes I’d like to make in our space. While I may not be able to achieve them all immediately, I’m confident that by getting my ideas together I am taking the first step in turning this dream living room remodel into a reality.
What bright and airy living room remodel dreams are made of.
One thing I am noticing is that the longer I blog the more clear I’m becoming on what my ideal interior style is. I like simple, clean lines, monochromatic tones and natural details thrown in to break up what can be an otherwise bland look. I stayed true to that aesthetic when planning out the remodel I’m sharing with you today.
First up on my list is a new couch. Having a sectional didn’t make sense in our last home because of the choppy layout but we have more than enough open floor spacein our current apartment to accommodate a low and light colored one. Seating is a bit of a challenge when we entertain and the extra seating a sectional would afford would mean being able to host bigger and better gatherings. I’m dreaming of a light frost gray sectional like this option from West Elm.

To compliment the new couch I’d absolutely love to add a new coffee table. I’ve been crushing on live edge coffee tables for quite a while and am completely sold on having a live edge maple option in our living room. Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors is queen of using raw edge in her living spaces (as seen here and here) and I just love how unique each piece feels. Pottery barn has a gorgeous option but for something really special and one of a kind I’d pursue Etsy.
While having a sectional couch would add room for a few extra guests I’d like to go one step further and get some low leather poufs that can be tucked under the coffee table and brought out when guests come around. These embroidered ones from DwellStudio are so gorgeous I needn’t look any further. They would be such a fun accessory for our living space, I’m quite certain I’d find myself parked on one even when we didn’t have company.
An airy set of lightly colored curtains like those found in the first image in this post are an absolute must in a remodel of our living space! Our builder grade blinds are useful in providing privacy but don’t give off the bright and welcoming look I’d like. At all. I’d love a set in a light linen or other sheer material that allows for the sun to shine through. Ideally I’d choose an extra long set that pools a bit at the bottom.
I’d finish off our room with a lightly colored rug with a subtle pattern in it and a new piece of abstract art above our television to finish off our yet to be completed gallery wall. I highly recommend Etsy as a fantastic source for finding art of all styles, sizes and prices.
That just about wraps up my dream living room remodel. This was so much fun to put together and really helped me nail down exactly what I want to do with our space. And hey, there’s no time like the present to get started! How would you like to remodel your living room this spring?
