Simple Bedroom Updates for Spring

April 7, 2016

There is nothing quite like the feeling of fresh beginnings that comes with the first warm and sunny days of spring.   The grass looks a little greener, the air feels a bit cleaner, flowers are in bloom at every turn, even the birds seem to sing a sweeter song.  The change in season is nothing short of inspiring.

My favorite way to take advantage of that spring momentum each year is by freshening up my home.  It feels like a necessary rite of passage, readying me for brighter days ahead.  I find that by making simple changes throughout my home, particularly in my bedroom so hints of spring are felt the second I wake up, I’m quickly able to get in the spirit.  With that in mind, I’m sharing the simple steps I take to get my bedroom spring ready.

Perform a Deep Spring Clean

Prior to making any other changes in your home I highly recommend getting down and dirty with a deep spring clean.  I know, I know, you don’t want to devote a precious weekend day to cleaning, but I promise that you’ll feel SO MUCH BETTER afterwards!

We all go into a bit of a hibernation mode during the winter, even those of us in Southern California.  The low light and desire to be cozy, particularly in the bedroom, ends up hiding a multitude of sins in the form of dusty corners and surfaces.  A day devoted to a deep clean will ready your home for the warm, sun-filled days to come.  Bonus points if you use DIY or natural cleaning products!  The recipe for my favorite DIY cleaning spray that I shared earlier in the year is perfect for spring cleaning with it’s invigorating scent.  Some of my other favorite more natural products are Mrs. Meyer’s Lemon Verbena Cleaner and Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes.

Swap Out Heavy Winter Bedding for Cheery, Spring Lights

Next up is your bed.  I find that changing out dark and heavy winter bedding for light and bright spring alternatives makes a huge difference.  My favorite bedding picks have always leaned towards more gender neutral options.  Even before I lived with my husband I gravitated towards more masculine patters and colors.  That is why I love a beautiful gray bedspread like this gorgeous duvet from Crane & Canopy.  It’s the perfect blank canvas for spring and can be livened up with brights or kept neutral when accessorized with crisp whites.

If a separate spring bedspread isn’t possible for you this year, never fear!  You can instead pick out a new, spring-y set of sheets at a relatively low price.  Even if a full set is out of the question for you, try picking up a fresh set of pillowcases.  You’d be amazed what a difference a new soft, crisp set of pillowcases can make.  I personally love this set from Crane & Canopy.  They’re a crisp clean white with just a hint of color and femininity.

Once you’ve addressed your spring basics, top off your bed with a fun throw to provide extra warmth on chillier evenings.  I opt for chunky knit options to provide a bit of textural interest.  This coral and navy striped throw is perfect for spring and adds a bit of pep and color to a neutral palette.

Accessorize with Spring Brights

Now that your bedding needs have been met you can move on to spring accessories!  Accessories are the number one easiest way to infuse your space with a bit of the season.  My favorite way to quickly change the mood of the room is through throw pillows.  They’re a great way to spice up a blank canvas and can be found at a relatively low price making them the perfect addition to any room.  The below navy and coral patterned pillow just screams spring and could be incorporated into your decor for years to come.

Finish Off with Fresh Sights and Scents

A gorgeous spring bouquet can add an infinite amount of light and cheer to a room.  Check out your local farmers markets (a national directory can be found here) or flower markets for the best deals. If all else fails, you can put together a gorgeous bouquet from blooms found at your local grocery store!  Earnest Home Co. did a great post on how you can easily spice up your typical market bouquet.  I highly recommend checking it out and incorporating some of her tips and tricks into your next floral arrangement.

Finally, utilize the power of scent to transform your space from a cozy winter retreat to an airy spring oasis.  A lightly scented room spray like this lavender lemongrass sage option that contains a hint of citrus is perfect for transitioning between seasons.

What are some of the ways you update your home with the changing of seasons?
