Today marks the inaugural post in a new monthly series called “Spotlight on Style” in which I’ll shine a spotlight on clothing and accessory brands that are doing things just a little differently. First up is Cuyana, a California based company producing simplistic pieces of the highest quality.
Cuyana, which means “love” in the Quechua language, was founded by two women driven by a mission to create a global scale lifestyle brand focused on quality over quantity. The founders strive to infuse each piece in their collections with classic elegance in hopes that customers will be able to carry the items with them through their lifetimes.

Cuyana is unique in that they handle their entire production chain with a level of thought rare in our consumerist society, making each item with care from start to finish. Once a piece is designed, Cuyana travels the world in search of the best of the best fabrics, leathers and other raw materials. This ensures that each product is permeated with the stories of the individuals and families who have worked to create the highest quality materials, often times for generations, developing techniques and expertise specific to their local cultures.
Cuyana is about the telling of the individual stories of those who produce their raw materials, in turn connecting the consumer to their production chain in a singular way. They are about living a life with a “less is more” mentality. They are about changing our collective mindset to appreciate quality over quantity. As someone who is becoming increasingly conscientious about living a more minimalist lifestyle I greatly appreciate Cuyana’s top of the line products and the messages behind them.
