Springtime Living Room Remodel

April 28, 2016

When my husband and I initially moved in together it was into his pre-existing apartment.  We planned on living there for at least another year and slowly began purchasing new pieces of furniture and art to replace the “bachelor” items he previously had in place.  It was exciting to pick out new items together and, after over a year, our main living space had come together in a way I was really happy with.

Fast forward to a couple months later when we were forced to move to a newly renovated apartment across the hall.  Our new home is absolutely gorgeous but has an entirely different layout than our last one.  All of the furniture and art we excitedly purchased?  Well, it awkwardly found a home in our new loft-like living/dining/office space.  Awkwardly being the key word.  It works and I did my best to make it feel like home but after living in the new apartment for six months it has become so clear that some changes are needed in order to achieve our desired layout.

When I came across online interior design website Laurel & Wolf, I was inspired to dream up a living room remodel and to start really thinking about what changes I’d like to make in our space.  While I may not be able to achieve them all immediately, I’m confident that by getting my ideas together I am taking the first step in turning this dream living room remodel into a reality.

Make Me Over with MAKE Beauty

April 27, 2016

One of the most fun aspects of blogging as of late has been having the opportunity to learn about different beauty brands and products.  I have always been quite set in my beauty ways thanks to my mother and grandmother who had tried and true beauty routines while I was growing up and have not experimented with products or my look too much in the past.  When I find a product I like I stick with it for years, even decades.  Seriously, I have been using the same brow pencil since I was 16 and can almost guarantee I will never deviate from it because I DON’T mess with my brows. Every so often though a line comes along that grabs me and makes me want to experiment with something new.  MAKE Beauty is one of those brands for so many reasons; for their products, for the beliefs they were founded on, and for their continued core values.

Started and produced in New York City, MAKE was created around the belief that there are no beauty rules and that “each individual is driven by an artist approach to their own personal reality”. How great of a foundation is that?  The company’s products encourage creative expression in whatever form that speaks to you, be it through a minimal look or one that is more dramatic. Whatever look it is you’re going for, MAKE wants to help you achieve it.

Shrimp and Asparagus Stir Fry

April 26, 2016

File today’s recipe under the “dinners we eat once a week” category.  Much like the oven baked salmon recipe I shared a few weeks back, this easy and healthy shrimp and asparagus stir fry makes an appearance on our table more often than I’d like to admit.  Who can blame me for defaulting to it?  It’s quick to whip up, offers an additional dose of vegetables and I just can’t get enough of the tangy combination of ginger, soy sauce and shrimp.  Add in a crisp glass of white wine and an evening warm enough to dine on our balcony and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect spring night as far as I’m concerned.

Bohemian Beachside Living

April 21, 2016

If this beachside abode isn’t the epitome of a perfect summer retreat for a free spirit I don’t what is.  Australian firm Les Interieurs created the absolute perfect spot to steal away from reality in this North Sydney abode.  The white backdrop, the the natural light pouring through the giant windows and open doors; it’s a dream space to renew and recharge one’s soul.  I find the seamless flow of indoor and outdoor living so inspiring and the monochrome color palette?  Color me charmed.  I’m ready to book my ticket and steal away for a month-long siesta by the sea.

Gluten Free Peanut Butter S’more Cookies

April 19, 2016

Have I ever mentioned that summer camp was a huge part of my life throughout my middle school and high school years?  I both attended and later worked at camps in Washington State as a camper and then as a counselor.  In fact, my first real job was at Camp Don Bosco in Carnation, Washington as a dishwasher!  To this day it was one of the hardest yet most rewarding jobs I have had.

To me camp was an escape from reality; an escape from being bullied in school, an escape from feeling out of place and awkward every day.  At camp I was given the acceptance and support to really discover who I was and who I wanted to be.  It was working at camp where I met one of the best friends I will ever have and it was camp I turned to when I lost him unexpectedly seven years later.  Camp was life, camp was love, camp was the smell of crackling embers, the sound of water lapping against the shore, the sight of hundreds of stars against the pitch black night sky.  Camp was…s’mores.

I always adored s’mores and the fact that I got to make them with my campers on our weekly campouts in the woods was something I always looked forward to, as did my campers.  The whole lot of us equated s’mores to a complete camping adventure and, even when our camp outs were occasionally rained out, I always made sure to still give the kids that part of their summer camp experience.

It has been years since I slept beneath the stars and even longer since I successfully built and started a campfire on my own.  I’m not sure I could flip a canoe these days to save my life and the words to some of the camp songs I once loved are long since gone from my head.  What remains are fleeting memories of being blissfully happy and free, memories of the sound of my best friend’s voice and laughter, sounds I will never hear again, and memories of roasting marshmallows around a campfire.  Camp may be gone from my daily life but every time I bite into a s’more I’m taken back to a less complicated time and place where I fell asleep to the stars and woke to the sunrise, where I’d surprise myself by discovering tan lines on my cheeks from smiling so much, where I fell in love for the first time, where I grew up.

Today, in honor of the warming weather, in honor of the days getting longer, in honor of it almost being time for summer camp once again, and in honor of my best friend, I’m sharing a piece of myself I don’t normally share along with a recipe for s’more cookies.
