The Best Yam Recipe Ever

November 17, 2015

best yam recipe

Behold the glorious yams.

I am something of a yam connoisseur.  I started perfecting my tasting skills at a young age and by now have yam consumption down to an art.  For this reason I hold Thanksgiving in very high regard. For one glorious day I have a free pass to eat as many yams as I want!  If I’m lucky there are even leftovers that I get to snack on during the week to come.  Thanksgiving is my jam.

I have obviously sampled many a recipe in my day, but as far as I’m concerned the recipe I am sharing with you today is THE ONLY ONE worth bothering with.  It is, quite literally, the best yam recipe ever.  It was originally introduced into my life when I was a child by my “Auntie Barb”, a close family friend.  Auntie Barb hosted an annual Friendsgiving gathering and made this every single year.

Auntie Barb eventually shared the recipe with my mom who started making it for our family Thanksgiving celebrations as well.  This meant that I would get not one but two rounds of yams each year! Thanksgiving kept getting better and better.

After I moved to Southern California I no longer got to enjoy these yams each Thanksgiving Day. Last year I decided that enough was enough, I needed my yams!  I resolved to start a new tradition that I could share with my husband and his family whom we spend Thanksgiving with and prepared my favorite yam recipe for the very first time.  Needless to say the yams were a hit and will be what I contribute to Thanksgiving dinner for years to come.

This recipe is straightforward and probably impossible to mess up.  It yields unbelievably delicious results, making it the perfect dish to share with your loved ones this Thanksgiving.  It has been special to my family for years and I hope that it can become a part of your family’s traditions as well.  Enjoy!

How to Create the Perfect Home Bar

November 12, 2015

home bar styling details

My personal home bar inspiration for my own home.

In keeping with the entertainment theme of Tuesday’s post on how to create the perfect holiday charcuterie, today I’m shining the spotlight on the home bar.  The home bar is a fundamental addition to the home of anyone who entertains on a regular basis and becomes particularly useful during the holiday season when friends and family are coming and going.  Having some basic liquor and mixers in your arsenal can turn a dull, low key gathering into a positively cheery evening and can go a long way towards easing holiday tension between family members…not that any of us are familiar with that!

Creating a home bar is a bit of an art form and can take time and patience when you have budgetary constraints.  I know from personal experience how paralyzing it can be to find yourself standing in a store with your limited college/post-college budget staring at walls of alcohol, mixers, pretty glasses, and accessories.  Fifteen of your closest friends are coming over in three hours and you just want to make everyone happy with your fully stocked and gorgeous bar!  I’ve been there.  While you likely can’t buy up the entire store and quite clone one of the beautiful bars shown here, you certainly can take inspiration from them and over time create a home bar of your own that is equally as Pinterest-worthy.

How to Make a Charcuterie

November 10, 2015

holiday charcuterie hither and tither

A gorgeous charcuterie to inspire from Ashley at Hither and Tither.

I adore a good charcuterie.  I might even venture to say that I am borderline obsessed with them.  I have no idea where this affection came from, but I am infinitely impressed by anyone who can create an impeccably beautiful and tasty spread.

As I have gotten older charcuteries have become my go-to whenever we are having a more formal get together (i.e. basically anything that does not involve watching a sporting event with friends).  I love them because they can be absolutely beautiful, accommodate any budget and offer enough variety to keep all of your guests happy.

Hearty Kale Stew

November 3, 2015

I have some very exciting news, it has officially dipped below 80 degrees in Los Angeles!  It only took until November 3…  In honor of this positively chilly weather I am bringing out the knee high boots, bundling up in sweaters and making a big pot of my favorite kale stew for dinner.

I first tried this recipe in the middle of August (which a was completely inappropriate time to be testing stew recipes) and we have been enjoying it on a bi-monthly basis ever since.  This stew is perfect for filling you up, warming you up and leaving you feeling healthy.

The Crimson Stranger – A Halloween Drink

October 27, 2015

With the month of October marching eagerly towards the day our country dedicates to pumpkins, ghosts, and witches, I am finding myself in the mood for dark and ghoulish Halloween drinks.  When considering recipe options the most important factor to me is that I do not want to drink anything too overtly gross (in my opinion anything with fake eyeballs or fingers floating in it falls into this category).  I am finding that I am much more interested in bringing any elegant elements that I can into Halloween this year rather than falling back on simply upping the scare factor.  This Halloween drink, aptly named The Crimson Stranger, blends bewitchingly beautiful garnishments with a splash of a dark crimson that resembles blood just closely enough to create the perfect Halloween drink.
