When Life Gives You Lemons

October 5, 2017

When I originally wrote my farewell post, “Goodbye…At Least for Now” in May of this year, I was newly diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, an incurable degenerative connective tissue disorder, and in need of some quality rest and relaxation. As I attempted to wade through my initial diagnosis as quickly as possible with the goal of learning, processing and moving on to the next chapter of my life in mind, additional diagnoses were made and the full scope of the damage this disease has caused to my body started to become clear.

After processing the diagnosis and what it meant for the rest of my life, I wallowed. I wallowed HARD, guys. I perfected the art of wallowing. I could probably write a book on it by now. I traded blogging 30+ hours a week for doctor’s appointments and spending all my spare time researching every facet of this disease that I could. It was overwhelming, it was heartbreaking and, ultimately, it was unhealthy. Then, just like that, I came up for air and realized that I was over feeling sorry for myself and ready to move on.

I missed possessing hope for the future. I yearned for all the ways Musings on Momentum used to fulfill me both creatively and intellectually. More than anything, I longed for this blogging community. After a great number of conversations with my husband about whether there is space for this platform in my new reality, I realized that the only thing that doesn’t have a role in my life is the stagnant place I found myself in post-diagnosis.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemons

The last six months have been a journey as I have gone from building the life I thought I should be living, to living the one I have been given. I’ve had to let go of the preconceived notions I held about what I thought my future should look like to fully embrace the realities that now dictate it. Was it part of my plan to get these diagnoses? No, not in any way shape or form. But who of us plans on receiving the kind of life altering news? All any of us can do is pick up the pieces and learn anew.

So, I am back. I am still working through what my return to Musings on Momentum is realistically going to look like but I knew that I couldn’t stay away any longer. Over the next few months, you can look forward to a revival of decor, style and musical inspiration as well as a very fun London vlog that I’m dying to share with you all. I’m eager to embark upon this next chapter, even though it is going to look notably different than I planned on.

Goodbye…at Least for Now

May 1, 2017

Over the course of the last few months I have written several iterations of this post and, inevitably, have never quite had the courage to press “publish”. I am notoriously terrible at dealing with endings and goodbyes and, as my blog continued to grow, the farewell I am saying today became increasingly challenging to express.

Musings on Momentum came to life nearly two years ago when I was first trying to find my place in Los Angeles and was newly engaged to my now-husband. It began with the goal of staying in touch with family and friends in mind but, over the years, turned into something so much more. It expanded into an incredibly rewarding creative outlet, one that challenged me and forced me to grow both as an individual and a professional. It brought unbelievably wonderful people and experiences into my life, in effect completely shaping the last two years of my life and changing the path I was on.

When I neared the end of my first year of blogging, I threw myself into Musings on Momentum full force, often spending 30 hours a week on my blog in addition to my regular 40 hour a week job. I loved it…the trials it presented, the growing pains, even the stress…at first. As my full-time career began to grow, however, the added hours and pressure involved in maintaining my blog became something I resented. I persevered, hoping the feeling would pass and that today’s post could be avoided, but after several months of waiting it out and posting content I wasn’t 100% in love with, it became clear to me that the time has come to put Musings on Momentum aside.

This decision was made even more pertinent following a medical diagnosis that I received last week. All throughout my life, I have been plagued with strange dislocations, broken bones, severe fatigue, and a grab-bag full of seemingly disconnected issues. Two weeks ago, I finally received my long-awaited answer when I was diagnosed with an incurable degenerative connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Since the diagnosis, life has been a blur of hospital visits, endless medical tests, and rounds of physical therapy, none of which are going to cease.

As my husband and I prepare for the next chapter of our lives, it is becoming increasingly crucial for me to pour every spare ounce of energy I have into my health and our marriage. We hope to start our family next year and the thought of doing so with my current physical limitations and level of stress intact does not feel like a smart or healthy choice. Since I obviously won’t be walking away from my full-time job now that my company-sponsored medical insurance is more important to have than ever, the clear answer to me is to say farewell to Musings on Momentum, at least for the time being.

You’re an incredibly talented group of women and it has been a privilege to share my hopes, dreams, and vision with all of you. You have all brought so many wonderful things to my life and have so generously opened your lives to me in return. I’ve had the opportunity to meet several of you in-person and would love to continue to do so in the future if you happen to find yourselves in Los Angeles.

As for me, I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with my newfound free-time but I’m certain I’ll figure it out. I’m envisioning a summer full of relaxation, barbecues with friends, exploring new areas of LA with my husband (who I will finally have time for!), and many, many mimosa-fueled brunches by our rooftop pool. I truly love each and every one of you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me into your community with open arms. You gave me a platform to express myself, you gave me your unconditional friendship and, most meaningfully, you helped me find my home.

Goodbye for now,

Kasie Chelanne

DIY Gemstone Choker

March 25, 2017

Weekend One of Coachella is a mere 21 days away, not that I’m counting.  Okay, I’m 100% counting but can you blame me?  Music festivals, Coachella specifically, are my happy place so the fact that my favorite festival of them all is just three weeks away is quite exciting.

One of my favorite parts of Coachella is how into the whole scene people get when it comes to fashion and beauty.  Hardcore music festival goers go WAY OUT for Coachella, to the point that attending Weekend One can feel a bit like taking in a bohemian-leaning fashion week.  It’s a fascinating and inspiring scene all at the same time.

While I don’t have any pretenses about being a style blogger, or even that stylish of an individual, I am definitely a DIY-enthusiast, particularly when it comes to festival-related projects like the DIY gemstone choker I’m sharing with you today.  This quick and easy music festival DIY is the perfect way to add a bit of unique personality and bohemian flair to any of your spring and summer looks.

Our London Travel Vlog

March 17, 2017

Today is the day! It is finally time for me to share my London travel vlog. Half of me is excited while the other half of me feels it necessary to issue a disclaimer along with it. You see, this vlog didn’t end up quite like my husband and I envisioned and it came very close to not being completed at all.

As someone who is new to travel vlogging, it didn’t cross my mind prior to this last trip abroad that perhaps winter is not the best time to try to get gorgeous footage of a European city, particularly of London. It rained close to the entire time we were in England which, from a sightseeing standpoint, wasn’t that big of a deal to us. After all, we both grew up in cities that get their fair share of rain. It became more of an issue when we were unable get the amount of footage we wanted and needed to create the account of our trip that we hoped to. As it turns out, you can’t pull out a camera in the middle of a windy downpour without ruining said camera. Lesson learned.

I am ultimately choosing to still share this London travel vlog because there are some truly memorable moments mixed in with the dark, wet and windy ones (Chelsea FC game, I’m looking at you!). The final product isn’t perfect, but the trip itself wasn’t perfect either and this feels like a pretty accurate representation of that experience. Like anything in life, you get a bit of the bad mixed in with the good and in this situation, the bad happened to involve getting soaked to the bone while having multiple umbrellas carried away by the wind. What can I say? Sometimes life isn’t as picture-perfect as you envisioned it being but it doesn’t make it any less unforgettable.
