The Benefits of Napping

March 11, 2016

Remember when you were a kid and absolutely hated having to take a nap every day?  I was so against napping that I convinced my parents I didn’t need such frivolity in my life at an unreasonably early age.  I remember feeling SO proud of myself for being such a “grown up” and not requiring any extra sleep during the day.  HA!  What a fool I was.  I’m sorry I was so quick to toss you aside, naps.  Sometimes you just don’t know how good something is until it’s gone.

Times have changed and these days I’m lucky if I get seven hours of sleep a night.  I’m not even talking about seven good hours of sleep.  Lately it has been seven hours of sleep interrupted by my new downstairs neighbor returning home from work (or wherever) at 2:00 AM.  Every night she takes to her patio for her nightly cigarette and proceeds to talk loudly about her life and laugh like a hyena.  And every night those two noises reverberate off our courtyard walls, landing in my bedroom.  Right around the time she crawls into bed I’m getting up for work.

Needless to say sleep has been scarce for me and it has been ROUGH, particularly since I have always been somebody who needs a minimum of eight hours of sleep a night.  The only good thing about this new found lack of sleep is that I have reintroduced napping into my life on weekends and guys, I’m loving it.  In fact, I’m becoming a bit of a napping fanatic so when Casper, an innovative company that offers high quality mattresses, sheets and pillows, contacted me ahead of March 14th’s National Nap Day to share some of my favorite napping tips and tricks it seemed like a match made in (napping) heaven.

Spinach Detox Soup

July 14, 2015

I have been all about detoxing lately in an attempt to speed along my body’s healing process and to jump start my immune system.  This Spinach Detox Soup is perfect for doing just those things and, as an added bonus, tastes great on hot summer days!

The finished product…Spinach Detox Soup!

The original recipe I used was found at Hello Natural (I am completely obsessed with this site, they have the most amazing recipes and natural tips and tricks!).  I stuck pretty close to the recipe but increased the amount of spinach included, used garlic and ginger powder rather than the recommended clove and root and left out the cumin because I didn’t have any on hand.  The result was a healthy, refreshing, surprisingly filling, and EASY soup that both my fiance and myself loved.  This soup is great for a light standalone meal or as a starter.  This is definitely going to be a mainstay recipe this summer.  Please let me know if you try the recipe and what you think!

On Love and Loss

June 25, 2015

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the death of one of my best friends.  He was my biggest supporter and the person who understood me better than anyone in the world; a kindred spirit in every sense of the word.  While the pain of grief eventually dulls it never completely subsides and you never stop missing that absent piece of you.

Instead of focusing on the memory of the moment I found out the news that would change so many lives and the devastating days that followed, I choose to focus on the love and strength he left behind.  He is never far from my side…I see him in black and brown butterflies, in a stranger calling me by the nickname only he used, in the sight of an orange baseball cap from afar.  I hold him close to me as I journey through life, hoping that I can make him proud and experience all the world has to offer for the both of us.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there. I did not die.
