The final two months of the year have long been favorites of mine because they mean, among other things, coming together as a community in collective celebration. The sense of togetherness during November and December is palpable and something that bonds us together as a society. This year, as I celebrate the season with family and friends, I am also making a point of embracing and honoring my own unique individuality and life circumstances with the help of Katy Perry’s INDI Fragrance and Katy Perry’s INDI Body Mist.

Katy Perry led the direction of both her new fragrance and body mist, with a firm focus on celebrating individuality. Katy Perry’s INDI Fragrance and Katy Perry’s INDI Body Mist were created to empower those who wear them to be their authentic, unique selves. Katy Perry’s INDI Fragrance has become my fall and winter go-to fragrance due to its complex and seductive scent. This one of a kind fragrance features eleven different musks blended seamlessly together with top notes of oriental plum, Italian bergamot, and white tea, making it as unique of a scent as those of us who wear it. Katy Perry’s INDI Body Mist is a lighter version of the delectable scent, meant to be reapplied throughout the day.

While the scent has become a fast favorite of mine, it is the inclusive, community-oriented message behind Katy Perry’s INDI Fragrance and Katy Perry’s INDI Body Mist that is particularly close to my heart. In April of 2017 I received a diagnosis that no one is ever prepared for. I was diagnosed with incurable degenerative connective tissue disorder and, from that moment on, life as I knew it was over. I won’t sugarcoat it – processing the word “incurable” is a daily battle and one that I continue to struggle with. However, the diagnosis of “incurable” also comes with many valuable life lessons that I have been forced to learn rapidly over the course of the last year and a half, all of which are ultimately leading me to a place of self-acceptance and a renewed desire to help those also battling chronic conditions, both physical and psychological.

MY TOP LESSONS FROM LIVING LIFE WITH A CHRONIC, INCURABLE CONDITION
- Embrace life when things don’t go as planned. This has the number one hardest lesson for me personally because I have always been a planner and have been someone who very much needs to be in control at all times. I have learned, however, that there is freedom in surrendering all expectations for how you think your life should be.
- Appreciate and accept WHO you are and WHERE you are. I grew up passionate about gymnastics, swimming, and dancing, none of which I can participate in now due to the physical risks involved. When all your passions are stripped away, it is easy to wallow and revert to a place of “woe is me”. While these feelings are necessary parts of processing challenging circumstances, they do not serve you in any way. Force yourself to look inward, beyond your physical or psychological differences, and find the good that you bring to the table. I may not be able to do a back handspring anymore or dance enthusiastically at concerts, but I can develop other talents that can help me connect with and help others, such as improving my communication skills.
- Rise up every single time you get knocked down and use that experience to help others. Just because I am dealing with the effects of a rare disease doesn’t mean that the lessons I’m learning can’t be applied to other life circumstances. Ultimately, we aren’t all that different. We all go through challenging situations and we all face disappointment and struggles. What distinguishes us from each other is also our biggest commonality; our uniqueness.

As we head into the final months of the year, make an effort to celebrate what makes you unique. Ultimately, we all succeed when we come together as a community and use our individuality to help lift others.
