Home Goals: Bedroom

September 10, 2015

Strangely enough, out of every room in our new home, I’m struggling the most with deciding how to arrange and decorate our bedroom.  We are going from a really large bedroom to one that feels a lot smaller.  Dimension wise it is not hugely different in size however thanks to an angled wall it feels a bit cramped to me.  We have measured the walls and our furniture again and again and have played with the layout and have determined that we can fit all of our existing bedroom furniture in but it’s going to be a tight fit.  Suffice it to say that I would not have purchased that wardrobe of mine had I known about our move.

Since it is a smaller space I am going to stick to light hues in an effort to keep the room feeling as open and airy as possible.  All our furniture is white or light wood and our existing bedspread is in shades of gray, so we are pretty well set for the bedroom.  The only real choices to make are in regards to what art to hang and what details I want to incorporate on top of my dressers.  I have a strange desire to go moodier and more graphic in details than I normally would to offset the lightness of the rest of the design.

When it comes to my dressers I want to stick to neutral shades with a bit of metallic and delicate pattern thrown in.  The below dresser top vignettes are providing a wealth of inspiration.

I’m going to style a dresser top in a similar manner, though I will opt for a darker tray to offset my white dressers.

You can not go wrong with books, candles and crisp, fresh flowers in the bedroom.

Finally, to cozy up the room a bit and add a layer of warmth in the upcoming fall and winter, I’d love a luxurious faux fur throw draped casually across the foot of the bed.

Faux fur

Perfection!

I’m guessing that the bedroom is the area of our home that will take the longest to complete so I’ve got a while to keep dreaming and planning, but I’m happy with the start I have made!

DIY Wardrobe Makeover – Part 2: Inspiration

July 16, 2015

After having to take last weekend off from Operation Move Out of Storage Unit/Create Awesome New Wardrobe (obviously a working title) due to travel schedules we are back at it this weekend!  Can you hear my enthusiasm?  Probably not because it’s barrrrellllly there.  This weekend equals lots of heavy lifting, a trip to Ikea, the renting of a U-Haul to carry the wardrobe home, and the mad dash to return the U-Haul before an hour passes and I have to pay more for it!  It will be one crazy race to the finish line!  On the plus side, it doesn’t seem like I’ll need to work out this weekend with all the running around like a madwoman and carrying hundreds of pounds of stuff that I’ll be doing.  So before the insanity begins, let’s pause and take a deep breath together while we look at some pretty pictures that are inspiring this makeover.

I love this little walk-in tucked under the eaves.

These soothing neutral tones make me feel all safe and happy inside. Now imagine a bit of color and pattern peeking through from the back.

This absolutely gorgeous closet makeover from the HUNTED INTERIOR is so many kinds of amazing!

A similar wardrobe looking bigger and prettier than anticipated.

A bit more feminine than I’ll go but the papered wall and natural touches are spot on. Kelly did a beautiful job with her space.

I’m not certain if the handles on the Brimnes will allow for painting, but I’d love to spray paint them metallic to offset them from the rest of the wardrobe.

Thank you for indulging in my wardrobe hopes and dreams with me!

When Things Don’t Go As Planned – First Edition

July 9, 2015

I had a different post in the making for today, a pretty and gratuitous decor post, but I’m feeling a little too steamrolled at the moment to continue on as planned.  This blog is supposed to be about forward momentum and positivity, solutions rather than problems, but I have to admit that I’ve temporarily lost sight of that.  Instead of ignoring this fact…ignoring that I’m overwhelmed by still-failing health, by an increase in monthly expenses, by trying to scrape by each month while still planning for the future, by the fact that I live in a city and culture where more, more, MORE is what is generally desired…I’m going to acknowledge how I feel, acknowledge that I won’t feel this way forever and acknowledge that I need to focus on my general attitude at the moment because negativity breeds negativity.  And who wants more negativity?!

So today I’m going to share quotes that are helping me get my mind in a better place and that are helping me focus on being grateful for all the things I have to be thankful for in my life. My hope is that they can inspire you as well and that maybe, like me, you’ll feel a little less alone by connecting with others out there.  Any tips and tricks you might have for snapping out of one of these moods would greatly be appreciated!

xoxo
