This past weekend my fiance and I went to HARD Summer, a mostly electronic festival that we have been to several times together. This year it was held quite a ways away from Los Angeles in Pomona and made for a long trek, but one that was well worth it! We met up with old friends, made some new friends, and listened to great music. That said…I’m really glad it’s over! We are SO tired and sore from walking around on cement for hours. In fact, we having a sneaking suspicion that we are getting too old to do this kind of festival without regretting it the next day. We ultimately sold our tickets for Sunday and opted for a relaxing day at home filled with catching up on all the work we missed getting done on Saturday.
Adventures in Pittsburgh Part 2: THE ROLLING STONES!
The Rolling Stones show in Pittsburgh was an absolute surreal dream…the sound quality was immensely better than it was at Petco Park in San Diego, our seats on field were so close to the stage and the chemistry between the band members we were able to witness firsthand was amazing. These guys had gotten the show down and were out there rocking out and having a genuinely good time. It is an experience I will never forget and definitely tops the list of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I will let the photos speak for themselves.

Following the show we finally made it into BZ’s for a beer and then went to SoHo for some amazing quesadillas (highly recommended) before heading back to the hotel. We missed our 5:45 AM flight the next morning, got home hours after we were supposed to and were completely exhausted for the next three days but I would not trade the experience for any amount of sleep in the world. It was truly an adventure of a lifetime.
Adventures in Pittsburgh Part 1: The City
Going into this past weekend my fiance and I were not entirely certain whether we’d arrive back in Los Angeles saying, “That was the greatest idea ever!” or “That was the WORST idea ever.” We were excited to see The Rolling Stones again but not entirely certain it was going to be worth the effort or journey. I am happy to report that we are in complete agreement that it was an absolutely incredible weekend and well worth the lack of sleep and time spent zigzagging the country twice within 36 hours. That is not to say that the adventure went off without a hitch. Quite the opposite actually…from the very beginning we were cursed with horrible flight luck that I’m going to skip over in lieu of sharing our experience in Pittsburgh itself.
After arriving at the airport in the wee hours of Saturday morning we checked into our hotel, ate a massive breakfast and took a long nap in preparation for the day ahead. Upon waking we took the airport bus into the city (you just can’t beat a $3.75 fee for a 20 mile ride!). On the bus we met a gentleman who lived a block from Heinz Field where the concert was being held that evening who gave us a few tips about where to get off the bus, where to eat, what to see in the hours before the concert, etc. One of his suggestions was to check out the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival being held just a block from where we were getting off the bus. Boy were we glad we followed his advice!
The JazzLive Fest was held June 19-21 right in downtown Pittsburgh on three separate stages. In addition to the incredibly talented musicians we got to hear for free, we checked out food trucks, local vendors, an area full of giant games like Jenga and Connect Four, and the Fest’s little beer garden. We ended up meeting a lot of other awesome people who were going to see The Stones and the whole environment started to feel like a big pre-party full of music lovers.
Eventually the rain clouds that had been looming in the distance moved overhead and the skies opened. We took shelter in Sienna Mercato, a restaurant/bar that was located right next to one of the Fest’s stages. Sienna Mercato is comprised of three distinct experiences on three separate floors. We headed straight to the covered rooftop bar because we had eaten at the food trucks earlier in the afternoon. We each sipped a beer and watched the rain come down overhead, all the while socializing with an ever-growing pack of Stones fans.
Once the rain had lightened up enough we decided to head across the river via PNC Park to the official pre-party being held at BZ Bar & Grill. Unfortunately once we got within a block of the place it became clear there was no chance we were getting into the overcrowded space. We settled for The Beer Market located right next door, another stroke of amazing luck. The Beer Market has hundreds (!!!) of different beers both on tap and in bottles including our absolute favorite, a beer discovered at Outside Lands last year that is NEVER offered in bars, North Coast Brewing’s Pranqster. It was an amazing find and put us in an even happier mood than we were already in heading into the show.
To be continued…
About Last Night
By the end of a Monday at work exactly zero part of me wanted to rush home, throw together a salad for dinner, get gussied up, venture down the ever terrifying Hollywood Boulevard to the Metro, deal with a Metro transfer at Wilshire and Vermont (but what do you meaaan we have to transfer from the red line to the purple line only to backtrack to get to the Wiltern?), all to make it to a 7:00 PM show at The Wiltern. SPOILER ALERT: We didn’t arrive until 8:15. But, as I was bemoaning my life, it hit me that we won’t have the ability to go on concert adventures like these sans the procurement of a baby sitter and with severe repercussions for that much longer so we have to make the most out of every possible adventure we can have now! So I tried to put a smile on my face, I was more successful once free of the crazies on Hollywood Boulevard and safely seated on the Metro, and enjoy these precious moments of undivided fiancé attention. I didn’t even mind it when he “pretended” to nod off on my shoulder. These moments of physical closeness are hard to come by these days with our busy schedules. It was sure to be a great night! Even if it meant I’d be exhausted for the rest of the week because I stayed up until 12:30 AM on a Monday night/Tuesday morning.
